God’s love is unfathomable

God’s love is unmeasured, exhaustless, extensive, horizon-less, infinite – unfathomable. It is not earned. It’s just there – and that makes zero sense to us. An interesting truth especially for those of us with children. We understand our own ability to possess a love like this when it comes to loving our kids, but if we think for a moment about someone loving us like that – a God that would be willing to love us like that – suddenly our understanding is lost. Interesting isn’t it? The hypocrisy of our thoughts. We see our weakness, we see our pain, we see our shortcomings, and we say – “No, way – it’s not enough. It isn’t possible.” But those thoughts, are not truth.
God’s love for us desired reconciliation so badly that he said, “give me the whips, thorns, nails.” He said give them to me and let me endure the pain my children deserve so that they do not have to…
His love is unmeasured. Psalms 103:11 “For as the Heavens are high above the Earth, so great is his mercy toward those who fear him.” It is impossible for it to be measured. It has no end. Yet still, we faithlessly think there is no way for his love to cover the places we’ve been or the things that we’ve done. Sin enters our life and we think we’re in this too deep, and we are tempted to discount the vastness of his love that sits waiting to sweep in like a flood scooping us out of that pit.
His love for us is exhaustless – Lamentations 3:22-23, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Our bodies tire. Our hearts grow weary. We come to a point of exhaustion where we cannot go another step without our body collapsing. But God, He is not like us. He never wearies. He never tires. His pursuit over our heart is exhaustless.
His love is extensive – Ephesians 3:18, “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.” It covers all things. It is extensive.
His love for us is horizon-less – Psalm 139:8, “If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave you are there.” It stretches the depths of the earth. There is no place we can go where his love is not already there. The horizon we see exists only in the finiteness of our minds. God is endless – his love for us is endless
His love is infinite – 1 John 4:10, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” He withheld NOTHING in showing his love for us. It is infinite.
His love is unfathomable – John 1:10, “He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.” God knew before he wrapped himself in flesh that rebellion would still be in our hearts. He knew the world he created – the people he made were still going to reject him, and even in the midst of it all, knowing before he endured the unthinkable that after receiving his salvation we were still going to go back and sin again – he still went to the cross to redeem us from our own inner wickedness. God’s love is unfathomable, and the truth of that messes with our mind. His love is limitless, and our minds are limited. We can’t get past the truth that where our mind ends – his love continues reaching on, and on, and on. It is unfathomable.
There is no darkness his light cannot expose. There is no mountain too high for his love to reach. There is no chain his love cannot destroy. There is no sin unworthy for him to forgive.
Romans 8:38 – “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”
I wonder today if you would be willing to meditate with me on the beauty of this week, and the unfathomable love of God, the love that led to the cross. The love that is available to you, and to me. The love that tells you, no matter the sin, no matter the cost, no matter your past – you are worthy. The love that sits – waiting for a decision to be made – Choose Him.
